As a sleep-obsessed brand, we’re here to share a few of our fav mattresses:

Know the Basics

For starters, it’s helpful to know what types of mattresses exist. There are three basic materials: foam, innerspring (also known as the old fashion coils) and hybrid, a combo of both.

Temperature is one of the most important factors in getting a good night’s sleep. Studies have shown that your body temp should drop about two degrees in order to fall asleep quickly and remain asleep. Experts agree that you should set your thermostat to about 65°F (18.3°C) before bed, but if you tend to run warm, the right type of mattress can also make a big difference.

For the Hot Sleeper

Generally, the rule of thumb is if you are a hot sleeper you should stick with innerspring mattresses. Foam tends to trap heat, where the springs allow for air flow. Our go-to innerspring mattress is the Avocado Green Mattress. Unlike the springs you may have grown up sleeping on, this mattress doesn’t squeak and creak. It comes in three different support levels, firm, medium and plush and Consumer Reports rated it highest in the innerspring mattress category.

For the Extra Hot Sleeper

That said, if you’re open to a foam option, you may be in luck with today’s new cooling technology. Serta has trademarked their own cooling system, in their Serta Arctic Mattress. It’s the classic foam mattress that you may love, but with 15x the cooling power that actively absorbs the heat.

For the Side Sleeper

Moving on to the most subjective aspect of a mattress: comfort. Many people talk about this as hard versus soft mattresses. Soft mattresses are not only plush, they also contour to your body and provide soft support where it’s needed. These usually come in the form of foam or sometimes they’re hybrid. These mattresses are ideal for side sleepers, who need the extra love for their neck, back, and hips. Our favorite is the Tuft and Needle Mint Mattress.

For Sleeping with a Partner

Motion is another thing to consider when choosing a mattress - especially if you’re sleeping with a partner. For people who have wildly different sleep styles, we recommend the BeautyRest Harmony Hybrid Mattress. Not only is it a hybrid, the middle ground for both sleepers, it is designed with motion isolation in mind in order to not wake your partner.
